NERIS

The National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) is set to replace the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) in early 2025, according to the recently released information from the U.S. Fire Administration.

“Once launched, the new NERIS platform will provide capabilities for documenting and introducing community risk reduction efforts, associated resilience and mitigation efforts into the overall preparedness and resilience equation, providing greater insights into vulnerability gaps where resources can be used to harden communities and minimize future emergency and disaster events.”  Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, U.S. Fire Administrator

NERIS data standard changes will have several implications for the fire service, including new incident data gathering elements and immediate access to USFA data at the national level in a cloud-based system.

What does this mean for your FirePrograms?  Once a data standard is released by the USFA in 2024, our coding staff are well-positioned to facilitate those changes into the fire incident form ensuring NERIS data standard compliance.

FirePrograms will connect to NERIS through our API (application interface) for immediate data access.  We anticipate that USFA connection to FirePrograms API will eliminate the need for today’s NFIRS data export process.

NFIRS will remain operational until the launch of the new NERIS system in 2025.

As more information from the USFA becomes available, we will keep you posted.  We look forward to keeping your organization up to date with the latest changes.
